Stress Intensity Factors

Validation of Mode I stress intensity factor (KI) computations against closed-form solutions using two independent methods: the J-Integral and the Crack Opening Displacement (CROD) method. All cases achieve a maximum difference of 1%.

J-Integral Method

Test cases:

  • 3.1 Crack in an infinite body — KI = σ√(πa)
  • 3.2 Centre crack in a finite-width strip — finite-width correction factor
  • 3.3 Edge crack in a semi-infinite body — correction factor 1.1215
  • 3.4 Cracks emanating from a hole — Bowie problem

Crack Opening Displacement (CROD) Method

Test cases:

  • 3.5 Crack in an infinite body
  • 3.6 Centre crack in a finite-width strip
  • 3.7 Edge crack in a semi-infinite body
  • 3.8 Cracks emanating from a hole
